At the recent PLUS D&O Symposium, Syllo CEO and Co-founder, Jeff Chivers, participated in a discussion on Generative AI’s impact on underwriting, the insurance industry, and addresses the question of whether AI can replace human judgment. This in-person dialogue provided a platform for Jeff to share a perspective that is core to our mission at Syllo.
Can AI replace human judgment in the next 5 years? Jeff notes, “I think it is the biggest question out there.” He goes on to frame the conversation not as a matter of replacement, but as one of partnership. This viewpoint is the foundation of our work at Syllo. Our AI-powered litigation workspace is designed to augment the capabilities of legal professionals, handling procedural tasks so they can focus their expertise on the complex and strategic elements of a case—areas where human judgment is irreplaceable.
Jeff goes on to offer views on the inherent limitations of large language models when left to their own devices. He emphasized that while many Generative AI tools are powerful for some tasks, they are unable to replace certain human cognitive roles. As he explains, “While these models are remarkable at pattern recognition, they fundamentally lack the ability for nuanced reasoning and moral judgment.” This perspective frames the conversation around the irreplaceable value of human expertise, particularly in fields that require strategic thought and ethical consideration. It highlights his view, and that of Syllo, that the future lies in a collaborative model where AI serves as a powerful assistant, not a substitute, for human professionals.
