We are thrilled to see Syllo’s own Alexis Mitchell, Senior AI Consultant, featured in a deep-dive interview with eDiscovery Today. With over 20 years of experience in data science and linguistics, Alexis joined Syllo earlier this year to bridge the gap between complex data structures and the way attorneys actually think.

In her conversation with Doug Austin, Alexis highlights a critical evolution in the industry: the move from traditional Technology Assisted Review (TAR) to reasoning-based AI.

While traditional TAR excels at pattern matching—finding “more of the same” based on a seed set—it often leaves lawyers asking why a document is relevant. Alexis explains that modern generative and agentic AI provide what attorneys actually need: deep language understanding. Instead of simple pattern matching, these tools allow legal teams to ask specific questions and receive answers backed by logical reasoning, directly connecting technical output to legal strategy.

Another profound insight that the interview touches on is the inefficiency of “data-first” approaches. Alexis emphasizes that agentic AI doesn’t just process data, but coordinates work to optimize efficiency. Instead of a “data-first” approach that limits reusability, Syllo’s workflows are anchored in the lawyer’s perspective and narrative story building for a matter.

This evolution supports what CEO Jeff Chivers calls “intelligence-driven workflows,” where discovery isn’t just about review but integrates directly with downstream tasks like chronology building, deposition preparation, and witness kits. As Alexis notes, these connections can transform past work into reusable strategic assets and solve many of the limitations of previous eDiscovery and litigation technology solutions.
